This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.
For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this document.
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
Children may be provided with some workbooks to complete independently or they may be directed to appropriate online materials eg Oak National Academy.
We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example science experiments which require specific resources may be postponed until the year group, or bubble, returns to school.
We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

4 hours of remote education
Microsoft Teams is the learning platform we will use to educate children remotely. All children have been provided with their own unique username and password. Once the home-school agreement has been signed and children are logged into Teams, they will be able to access the learning for the day, take part in scheduled video calls and communicate directly with their year group teaching staff. Other online learning tools provided by the school for home use will still be available: Doodle, Times Table Rock Stars, spag.com (Y6 only) and more.
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
Where families do not have access to suitable devices we are able to offer laptops to use for remote learning through a loan agreement. Please email email@example.com if you would like to apply to borrow one of our laptops.
We have a number of data sim cards which we can allocate to families who have no internet connection but are able to use a mobile phone as a hotspot. For families without mobile phone access we have a limited number of internet dongles.
We may be able to provide some printed materials for pupils until they are set up with a laptop and internet connection. This will be arranged on an individual basis with your child’s class teacher. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you require help with this.
Teachers will upload learning for the day each morning on Microsoft Teams. These lessons will be made up of a combination of Powerpoints and other presentations including voiceovers by teachers and worksheets/activities which can be completed and submitted via Microsoft Teams. Teachers may also record short video clips or provide links for children to access appropriate online resources. Teachers will provide feedback on work uploaded to Teams. This may be individual or group feedback. Teachers will also video call children each week to ‘check-in’ with them and offer additional support.
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
We expect all pupils to engage with remote learning and teachers do take registers each day. Where pupils are not engaging, teachers will follow this up with parents. If you have any problems which are preventing your child from accessing remote learning, please email email@example.com or contact the school office.
We understand that parents are busy, with many people currently working from home, therefore we have tried to minimise the amount of support pupils need with remote learning. However, because some of our children are very young, it is likely that they will require some help and support to access their learning. For this reason, we have taken the decision to upload all of the work for the day in the morning, rather than following the school timetable, so that parents are able to choose the most convenient times to access the lessons.
Staff will take registers daily to record which pupils are engaging with remote learning. Where children are not engaging, staff will contact parents via telephone. During the call, staff will try to find out any barriers to learning and direct parents to the right support. As a school, we will support children and parents in every way we can so that they are able to access remote learning. Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
Teachers will be assessing children’s work daily to inform future planning. Feedback will take many forms including, but not limited to, individual written comments, whole group or class feedback and additional feedback during video calls each week.
We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
All learning for the day will be posted in the morning so that parents are able to amend the normal school timetable to fit in around family life.
Work will be differentiated to match the needs of pupils of differing abilities, including those pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. This may mean that your child is provided with more support when completing the same learning activities as his or her peers or they may be given teaching and learning activities that are different.

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
Where individual children are isolating (but the rest of the bubble remains in school), we will provide work through Microsoft Teams. Teachers will still be available to contact through Teams throughout the period of isolation but please be aware that the response may be slower as teachers will also be working with the rest of the class in school full time. Children will receive feedback from teachers for the work they do during their isolation period and remote education will mirror what is being taught in class where possible.
